It used to be that birds gathered leaves to build their nests with to fight off bacteria but the leaves have now been replaced by cigarette butts.
Scientists in Mexico city say that more and more ‘city’ birds are resolving to collecting cigarette butts to build their nests instead of leaves.
“Birds have to make due with whatever they can find, especially in a crowded, busy city,” says one researcher.
According to the scientists, the remaining tobacco in the butts are great bacteria deterrents, while the filters make for good insulation to keep the hatch-lings warm.
Scientists discovered that some nests were build using as many as 50 cigarette butts.
