And yet, it’s reportedly a flaw in the instrument itself that makes it sound so very angelic.

Stradivari and Guadgnini produced their violins in the 17th and 18th century in their workshop in Cremona, Italy. The magically sound of the violin was known as ‘the secret of Cremona’.

Many experts believed the unique sound of the violin came from a special type of varnish that was used to cover the instrument of a mold inside the wood.

A microscopic examination of a Guadagnini violin, dated 1753, conducted by physicist Franco Zanini, reportedly reveals asymmetry in the wood of violin. That little imperfection is now said to be the reason why Stradivarius violin sound so incredible.

Zanini claims that these small imperfections may have been created by the masters to get rid off the unpleasant sound heard with symmetric instruments.

The inspected violin also revealed minute modifications to the ‘f-hole’, small openings on top of the violin, shaped in the letter ‘f’, commonly referred to as ‘sound holes’.

The changes in the sound holes are so minute in the examined Guadagnini violin, they aren’t visible to the naked eye.

Zanini hopes he can new examine a Stradivarius violin to confirm his findings.
