The bizarre story unfolds in New Zealand, when 65 year old Denis Duthie is celebrating the 50th wedding anniversary of his parents with a few of his students from New Plymouth’s Western Institute of Technology.

Duthie, who is diabetic, is offered a few vodka shots by his pupils, which he downs with no problem. All is well until a few hours later Duthie notices everything around him is dark.

“I thought it was dark again and that I must have had a blackout,” says Duthie, who simply went to bed not thinking much about his inability to see anything.

“At 3:30PM when I turned on the light in my room, I realized I was completely blind” the prof tells nzherald.co.nz.

Duthie went to the Taranaki Base Hospital, accompanied by his wife. After being checked by doctors, Duthie’s wife was told she should say her goodbyes because her husband would more than likely not make it through surgery.

Laying on the operating table, with his gut cut open, doctors noticed an ‘odor of nail polish’ escaping from Duthie’s intestines. That symptom only meant one thing: Duthie had methanol poisoning.

The only possible solution to save Duthie’s life was to administer Ethanol. The hospital was short on medical ethanol and a quick thinking surgeon suggested feeding the patient high quality liquor because ethanol is found in alcohol.

A quick trip to the local liquor store and a bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label later, Duthie woke up five days after being administered the ‘ethanol drink’ and got his sight back.

“I woke up five days later, I opened my eyes and could see immediately,” Duthie says overjoyed.

Seems that Duthie’s diabetes and the medication he was taking mixed with vodka were just the proper ingredients to give him severe and almost deadly methanol poisoning.

Duthie’s word of advice to other diabetics: “Take it easy!”
