The website ‘scroogled.com’ claims that Google only provides ‘paid for’ searches on its Google Shopping site.

“In the beginning, Google preached, ‘Don’t be evil’—but that changed on May 31, 2012. That’s when Google Shopping announced a new initiative. Simply put, all of their shopping results are now paid ads,” Bing writes on the anti-Google site.

Bing claims that Google’s shopping searches are nothing more than “a list of targeted ads that unsuspecting customers assume are search results”.

Microsoft’s Bing search further states: “Google admits they’ve now built ‘a purely commercial model’ that delivers listings ranked by ‘bid price’”.

Bing implores internet users not to “get Scroogled this holiday season” by trying out Bing search engine, instead of Google Shopping.

Interestingly enough Bing’s own search results also include results from companies that have paid to be listed.

Stefan Weitz, senior director at Bing, claims however that the majority of its listings are from vendors that signed up for free, but does admit that Bing’s search results also includes products from third-party aggregators like the eBay-owned site Shopping.com.

Bing has actually shut down its free sign-up for the holiday season, and any new vendors interested in being listed are directed to Shopping.com, where they will have to pay to be included in search results.

Google released a written statement saying that ads “are ultimately the better answer for internet users”.

Google’s paid-for shopping search results are only available in the United States a the moment but will be rolled out to other countries come February 2013, including the U.K, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Spain, Japan, Brazil and Switzerland.
