(NDJ) – 24 year old Allyn Rose who will represent Washington in the Miss America pageantry come January 2013, had both breasts removed to avoid the possibility of contracting cancer.

Rose is a carrier of a rare chromosome deviation that increases her changes of contracting breast cancer by 75 percent.
When Allyn was just 16 her mother died of breast cancer at the young age of 51. Other family members have also died from the disease.
“My mom had her right breast removed when she was 27 but at 48 the cancer came back full strength in her left breast,” Allyn says.
Allyn says her dad tried desperately to convince her mom to have that breast removed as well but she refused. Eventually it was fatal for her.
“I want to see my children grow up. Breasts don’t determine the quality of my life,” the brave Allyn Rose says. “It’s a scary thought that one day I will wake up with a new body but I am not leaving anything to chance.”
Rose says if she wins the Miss America title, it will be her mom’s dream come true and she’ll wait to have the surgery until she fulfilled or her pageantry obligations.
If she doesn’t win the title she’ll have the surgery done in July 2013.
