Within minutes the herd consumed 500 liters (about 133 gallons) of mahua – a strong locally brewed fermented alcoholic beverage – from open vats. No sooner did the alcohol take effect or the elephants began their rampage of destruction.

One store, three homes and most of the farmers crops were obliterated by the drunken herd, leaving the fields of Dumurkota looking like wasteland.
Police and villagers eventually managed to get the drunken elephants back on their route into the jungle but the damage was done.
Police chief Asish Samanat said the elephants behaved just like other drunks: “Aggressive and unreasonable but much much larger”.
“They will more than likely have a dragon of a hangover tomorrow,” the chief added.
The destruction of the crops will come to cost the town dearly however. For most farmers in northern India, cotton crops is their only means of survival.
Without harvest there is no money, making it not only difficult to provide for families but extremely tough to buy seeds for next season’s planting.
