(NDJ) – Labor Day, often referred to as the last holiday of the summer, is probably America’s most taken advantage of vacation time.  Millions of people hit the road, plow the beaches and barbecue grills are burning red hot.  Sounds like the perfect long weekend doesn’t it?

Did you know that Labor Day as we now call it was celebrated for the first time in New York City on Sept. 5 1882 by about 1o,000 workers?  It didn’t take long for the rest of the country to follow suite.  By 1893, more than half the US states were celebrating Labor Day.

In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed the bill designating the first Monday of September as Labor Day, making it a federal holiday. Today, you and the rest of the country get to kick back for a long weekend of doing nothing or just letting loose, thanks to the foresight of a “few” workers back in 1882.

First Monday of September marks US Labor Day, an official federal holiday.

But Labor Day brings with it some less desirable side effects: heavy traffic often leading to grid locks and accidents, long lines at airports and supermarkets, an increase in drunk drivers and more pool drownings and more burglaries.

According to AAA there will be about 34.4 million people traveling to and fro this Labor Day weekend.  That means that roughly 8% of Americans are heading somewhere, either by car, by plane or by train.

Look at Labor Day numbers of people traveling and money spend:

For many Americans, Labor Day may not have the same meaning as it did for the 10,000 workers having a parade through New York City back in 1882, still, it is pretty clear that Labor Day has become USA’s official bash day.

Whatever your Labor Day plans may be, a backyard cookout or a relaxing day in the sun, brewskie in hand if you’re so inclined or head on out to the malls for a super shopping spree – many stores have special Labor Day only discounts, from the entire NDJ staff, have a great Labor Day weekend.  Enjoy and make it a safe one.
