A 6.0 magnitude quake once again shook the Northern Italy near Bologna, destroying older buildings and structures and killing at least five people.
A clock tower was literally “cut in half” and centuries old brick and cemented facades and chimneys lay shattered to bits and reduced to rubble in the streets.
At least a dozen people were injured from falling debris on Sunday as the quake seriously damaged historic churches, bell towers and a medieval castle.
The quake struck at about 4 a.m. local time and was followed by a series of jolting aftershocks.
“I am 83 and I have never felt anything like this,” said Lina Gardenghi in the town of Bondeno, near Ferrara, Reuters reported.
“I ran out in my underwear,” one man told Italian television.
At least two aftersocks reached magnitude 5.1, sowing fresh panic, further damaging already weakened buildings and causing more structures to collapse.
The death toll has been climbing as rescuers uncover more bodies from people who died in their home while still asleep when the quake struck during the early morning hours.
Authorities evacuated 3000 people from their homes in the areas of Modena and Ferrare. 500 prisoners had to be relocated to other facilities.
The government urges “curious” people and visitors to stay away from the disaster areas in fear the more debris may be falling from buildings, which could lead to more casualties.
