(NDJ) – The state of Massachusetts is appealing a court decision that would allow one of the state’s male inmates to undergo a sex change operation in prison.

The state appealed the decision on grounds of fear that the safety of the prisoner, once he’s a woman, can’t be guaranteed in an all male prison.
The US Department of Correction says however that Michelle Kosilek will be given all the medical attention and care she needs.

Kosilek changed his name from Robert to Michelle, after he was convicted of murdering his wife in 1990.
The judge who approved the sex change operation is convinced it will solve Michelle’s identity problem.
This is the first time in USA history a prison is ordered to work together with doctors in ensuring a proper sex change operation for one of its inmates.
