No one has come forth to claim this attack; Mimmo Consales, the mayor of Brindisi blames the Mafia however.
A security officer said the bomb was in a container when it detonated. Newspaper Repubblica states there were two explosions in front of the Francesca Morvillo Falcone school, causing major chaos and panic between students.

The paper claims the bombs were left behind in front of the schools inside backpacks.
The school is named after famous anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone, who together with his wife and three security guards was killed 20 years ago when the Sicilian Mafia used half a ton of dynamite to blow up the road between Palermo, Italy and the airport.
“This is an unprecedented Mafia attack,” Consales told TeleNorba TV.
Anna Maria Cancellieri, minister of Internal Affairs said that “investigations are considering several possibilities for the attack”.

“There are several hypothesis but none are conclusive,” Cancellieri said.
An anti-mafia rally is planned for later in the day.
