30,000 Year Old Flowers Bloom Again

MOSCOW – Russian biologists have managed to bring 30,000 year old flowers back to bloom.

The seeds were first discovered under Siberia’s permafrost that sees to it that the earth never completely thaws thus protecting everything beneath it. The particular flowers are of the Silene Stenophylla variety and date back to the pleistocene era.

The biologists involved in with the project and lead by Svetlana Yasjina of the Russian Academy of Science write about their accomplishments in the Proceedings of The American Academy of Science.

They explain how important the permafrost is to planet earth for the preservation of plant live and grasses that allegedly have disappeared for centuries.

The seeds were found in underground holes that were made by squirrels some 31,000 years ago and served as ‘storage bins’ for their food. The seeds were at a depth of about 125 feet below earth’s surface.

Scientists are now hopeful that this discovery will allow them to find organisms that are stored in the ice coming from Mars.
