BALTIMORE – With so many diet fads coming and going, it’s no wonder that people are confused about what works and what doesn’t.

A new study indicates that ‘fasting’ is the way to go to achieving a healthier, longer and thinner life.

Researchers aren’t talking about the Ramadan fasting that lasts 40 days or the one day or one week fasting, however.

Instead, health gurus are referring to ‘every other day fasting’ that seemingly holds the key to living longer and lose weight at the same time.

According to this American study, the advantages of every other day fasting are enormous.

Already results have shown that people who committed themselves to eating one day and sticking to the bare minimum to stay alive the next day and then repeat that process, have gotten an entirely new ‘body boost’.

The researchers say their test subjects had better memory, better heart rhythms and even those with early onset of Alzheimer’s did remarkably better on the every other day fasting plan.

When the test was conducted on mice it revealed that the those placed on the fasting program produced less insulin and their brain was more active and alert, versus mice that were allowed to eat what they wanted, produced more insulin which makes the brain ‘lazy’.

Mark Mattson, head of the research at the John Hopkins University in Baltimore said:

“Calorie restriction extends life, protects the brain as well as the heart and the veins against age related illnesses.”

Mattson explains that calorie restriction triggers a stress reaction on the neurons, the nerve cells of the brain, thus improving brain function.

Earlier research of the same study also indicated that fasting may help fight cancer.

By denying your body what it wants, your cells go into ‘survival’ mode, which makes them better equipped to fight of the stress and damage caused by chemo therapy, according to Mattson.
