PALO ALTO – The non-profit organization “Respect the Breast” is fuming mad at Facebook for removing images of breast feeding mothers from its page.
Facebook allegedly censured the page because there were ‘too many’ pictures on it of mothers with naked breasts feeding their babies.
The social site said it does its best to stay a ‘proper’ site: nudity is punished, naked photos are removed and pages that show too much for an unspecified period are made inaccessible.
Facebook removed 4 photos from the Respect The Breast page and hasn’t given the agency a chance to rebuttal.
Since November 2011 38 photos have been removed from the Facebook page and founders of Respect The Breast, Heather Stultz and Cece Buehner have started a petition to stop Facebook’s practice of removing photos.
“Keep our beautiful breast feeding photos on Facebook. Breast feeding isn’t sexual but enhances the bond between a mother and her child. Respect the breast,” says a statement on the page.Canadian Emma Kwasnica who had also some of her photos censored on Facebook that deal with breast feeding is furious about the social site’s action.
To express her discontent, Kwasnica had organized several breast feeding sessions on several Facebook pages.
Although the U.S. government promotes breast feeding, having mothers breast feed their child in public places is still a touchy issue.
Many shopping centers in the United States provide special room where breast feeding mothers can feed their child but equally as many do not, forcing the mothers to feed their baby in public.
Facebook keeps defending its action of removing photos saying: “it is not against breast feeding and photos of breast feeding can be on its site as long as they comply with Facebook’s rules and regulations”.
Thus far the ‘allow breast feeding’ petition is still online and about 500 people have signed it.
