PORTLAND – An American biologist has come forth saying that eating a dish of shrimp is one of the worst things a person can do for the environment.
According to biologist J. Boone Kauffman from the Oregon State University, shrimps harvested at a Asian shrimp farm create 10 times as much CO2 (carbon dioxide) damage than the same weight in beef, for which rainforest is chopped down.
Shrimp growers need an area of 6 cubic feet of mangrove forest for every 2 pounds of shrimp. After 3 to 9 years, shrimp growers stop using that area because the ground has become too polluted.
Afterwards, it takes the land 40 more years to recover, according Prof. Kauffman.
That means that 100 grams of Asian shrimp cost the equivalent of 198 kilo (about 430 pounds) of CO2, Kauffman stated during a recent gathering of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Mangrove forests are needed to protect the Asian coastline against storms and Tsunamis, such as the 2004 Tsunami that killed 230,000 people.
