LOS ANGELES – The Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles has discovered a technique whereby stemcells could perminantly repair the damaged tissue of a human heart.
Cardial stem cells provided by the heart patients themselves could even regenerate the damaged heart tissue.
The revolutionary new treatment cuts the permanent scar tissue on the heart in half and even stimulates the growth of muscle mass in patients who had a heart attack.
25 people, each one about 53 years old and who had suffered a heart attack within one month of the experiment, were chosen to participate in the medical breakthrough.A caterer, inserted int0 a patient’s neck and pushed down to the heart, was used to retrieve a tiny spec of healthy heart tissue to generate the cardial stem cells from.
Once the cells have been produced, they are reintroduced to the patient by injected them into the arteriae coronariae, the two main arteries that extend from the Aorta into the heart and provide the heart with blood.
Via these veins, the stem cells reach the damage heart and begin their healing and regeneration process.
Researchers noticed that one year after the treatment, heart scar tissue dropped from 24 to only 12 percent. Patients who didn’t get the stem cells had no degradation in scar tissue.
The capacity to pump blood however stayed the same for both the patients who received the stem cell treatments and those who didn’t.
Professor Eduardo Marban calls the treatment an ‘amazing discovery that works better on people than it does with animals’.
‘The thought that damaged heart scar tissue couldn’t be healed is now none existent,’ said Marban.
Patients who received the treatment are doing well but are required to undergo routine checkups to determine the long term effects of the stem cells. Results of the followup tests are expected later this year.
