KOTON KARIF – A surprised attack by armed men on a prison in Koton Karif, Nigeria, allowed 200 inmates to escape.
The group of men stormed the jailhouse armed with guns and machetes and allegedly used explosives to barge through the lightly constructed metal front door. The prison is old, in bad condition and lacks adequate security provisions.
During the attack, 200 prisoners managed to escape. They are still at large.
Authorities believe this is not the work of the militant movement Boko Haram, which is anti-Western and terrorizes parts of Nigeria that is segregated by predominantly poor Islamic communities in the North and prosperous Christian families in the South.
A manhunt has begun to ’roundup’ the escapees but thus far not a single prisoner has been recaptured.
