SEATTLE – Microsoft announced the new Windows 8 for PCs will be available soon. In the interim, the public can download a free beta version of the company’s most successful operating system to date.
Microsoft will hold a world conference showcasing W8 during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Afterwards, the entire world can download the beta version absolutely free of charge.
The company is taking the same approach with its newest operating system as it did when it first introduced Windows 7 and allowed everyone to download a free version that PC owners could use for several months.
With Windows 8 however, Microsoft has decided to call the launch not a beta version but a ‘consumer preview’, because a ‘beta’ product is no longer considered a software that ‘needs still debugging’.

For example, an existing ‘beta’ versions of Google’s Gmail, has been working flawlessly for several years.
Additionally, Microsoft doesn’t want users to think that ‘Consumer Preview’ means ‘a work in progress’ either.
Microsoft hopes that lots and lots of PC users download the ‘free’ Windows 8 version which is available come February 28th, install it, work with it, show it to friends and get hooked on it.
