VATICAN – A shocking statement by a high ranking official at the Vatican has the world on edge with the news that Pope Benedict XVI may be dead before year’s end.
Cardinal Romeo allegedly made that statement to Italian businessmen and Chinese representatives of the Catholic church in November 2011.
The Chinese delegates feared the Cardinal was talking about a ‘murder plot’ on the Pope and informed the Vatican, which started a secret investigation into the allegations.
The Vatican’s findings were compiled in a reports that was handed to Pope Benedict XVI end December 2011.
The Italian newspaper ‘Il Fatto Quotidiano’ (The Daily Fact) uncovered the rumor and published it on Friday:
“During his talks in China, Cardinal Romeo predicted the death of Pope Benedict XVI. His statement was made with such convictions that a possible murder plot came to mind immediately,” writes the paper.
The spokesperson for the Vatican has responded to the news print saying:
“The story is so absurd we simply can’t comment on it.”
But when asked about an alleged attempt to kill the Pope, the spokesperson didn’t deny that documents eluding to a murder plot indeed do exist.
While in China, Romeo allegedly also said that Cardinal Angelo Scola would take the Pope’s place after his death. Romeo reportedly also spoke to the businessmen and delegates about internal conflicts going on in the Vatican.
Romeo, who didn’t except his statements to be repeated back to the Vatican, is reportedly acting like everything is normal.
The last time a murder plot was attempted on a Pope was in 1981 when Paus Johannes Paulus II was critically shot but survived.
No word on the Pope cancelling his plans to visit Mexico in March this year, because of the report.
