NEW YORK – Police agents who worked at the World Trade Center in New York after it collapsed ten years ago, have three times more cancer than the ‘normal’ average.
Of the 12,000 officers that were called to work at the twin towers after the attack, 297 of them got cancer afterwards. That number is three times the number of cancer cases reported before the terrorist attack.
Already 56 of the officers diagnosed with cancer after the Trade Center was destroyed, have since died.
People living in Manhattan have long claimed that the dust and ash clouds generated during the imploding of the towers, contained toxic materials.
The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) recently published information that supports this claim.
Prior to 9/11, six officer per year were diagnosed with cancer. After the attack that number jumped to 16 per year. The average age an officer had to quit his job because of health reasons after 9/11, is 44.
Lung cancer was the most common cancer diagnosed in officers. However, rarer forms of the disease, such as cancer of the tongue, nostrils and bile duct were also diagnosed.
55 year old retired officer Edwin Rivera blames his cancer on the dust he inhaled at Ground Zero.
“We set on a pile of debris, eating, drinking water and taking our breaks there. There wasn’t a place we could go to avoid breathing the toxic air. I have a cancer that I should have never had,” Rivera told the New York Post.
The release of the new number of cancer victims as a direct result of working at the World Trade Center after it was attacked, will be incorporated into a campaign listing illnesses that make 9/11 workers eligible for compensation.
