MOSCOW – The Russian government plans to combat terrorism in North Caucasus by increasing the flow of tourism to that region.
The government hopes that a steady flow of tourists will help the impoverished area and reduce or eradicate terrorist activities.
Plans are in the works to turn the mountainous terrain into an equivalent of the Alps, complete with ski resorts and cure clinics.
The city of Moscow is hoping that the new development will provide for 330,000 new jobs in the regions of Ingushetia, Dagestan and Chechenya. Developers say billions of dollars will be invested in the project.
Ahmed Bilalov, who heads the investment division of the huge development program, admits there is a concern for safety.
“Islamic extremists often commit terrorist attacks in North Caucasus,” says Bilalov.
“There are plenty of ‘unsafe’ regions in the world that a lot of people travel to, so why not to North Caucasus?,” states Ahmed.
Bilalov says the region has spectacular views of mountains, glaciers, mountain rivers and coast line that many people have yet to discover.

Reportedly, the development of ski resorts and spa clinics won’t be fully completed until 2025 but will be operational before then.
