LONDON – The only World War I veteran still alive passed away on Saturday. She was 110 years young.
Florence Green joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1918, two months before the war ended. She was just 17 years old and served as a waitress at a Military Hall in Norfolk, U.K..
Although Green never saw combat, the U.K. government recognizes that the Florence was part of the ‘active’ force and served as a ‘soldier’ in World War I, thus entitling her to being called a WWI veteran.
June Evetts, Florence’s daughter said about her mother:
“She lived a remarkable live.”
“She’s lived through many changes and wasn’t proud to be last veteran alive. She was proud of what she did however, and we are so proud of her.”
Claude Choules, the last known living soldier of the Great War, died in May 2011 in Australia.
Like Florence he was 110 years young.
Florence Green died peacefully in her sleep.
