MEXICO CITY – The Mexican drug cartel Caballeros Templarios (Temple Riders) has offered its rival gang a ‘stop the violence’ treaty during the Pope’s visit.
Pope Benedict XVI is scheduled to visit Mexico’s cities of León and Guanajuato from March 23 to 26.
The drug cartel Caballeros Templarios houses in Guanajuato and has placed 11 posters around the city asking for a temporarily ‘peace treaty’ between rival gangs out of respect for the Pope and the people of the city who want to welcome the father.
The cartel has taken the initiative to peace because it believes that Guanajuato should be violence free when Pope Benedict visits the city.
As of yet, the other gangs have not responded to the Caballeros’ request or given any indication that they will comply.
Mexico has been in a cycle of violence and killings mostly because of gang war and drug cartels fighting for territory and delivery routes into the United States since its president declared his own war against the drug lords.
