MANILA – Rescue teams are still searching for dozens of missing individuals who got trapped beneath landslides that resulted from a major earthquake striking a central Island in the Philippines on Monday.
Buildings were destroyed and roads were lifted off the ground. Already 22 people have died in the quake but officials fear the death toll will rise because rescue teams have a difficult time reaching the devastated region.
“We have no water and power because electric posts were toppled,” Guihulngan Mayor Ernesto Reyes told The Associated Pres. “Many of our roads were damaged, including bridges, and stores are closed. We’re isolated.”
Bodies are being dug out from underneath the landslide in the mountain village of Solongon in La Libertad town, in the province of Negros Oriental. News reports state that as many as 100 houses may be covered by the thick mud.
The quake measured 6.9 on the Richter scale.
The Philippines is known for severe storms and is often blasted several times a year by heavy monsoon rain that cause flash floods and mudslides which often kill dozens of locals.
Although the Philippines is part of the ‘Pacific Ring Of Fire‘, earthquakes however are less common; yet in recent years there has been a notable rise of those as well.
A magnitude-7.7 quake killed nearly 2,000 people in northern Luzon in 1990.
Weather experts blame climate changes as the cause of an increase in seismic activity in the Philippines.
