BRUSSELS – Most of Europe is caught in an extreme winter blizzard blowing in from Siberia Russia, bringing with it extreme cold and plenty of snow.
Already 220 people have died because of the severe weather and weather reports do not see immediate relieve in sight.
In many countries traffic is brought to a complete standstill causing miles upon miles of gridlocks. One GPS manufacturer claims its European road map shows over 6,400 miles of stranded traffic.Flights have been cancelled and in Italy, the Colosseum and the Forum Romanum, two major tourists spots were closed down because of excessive snowfall.
In Eastern Europe, the Ukraine is hit hard. The country has a large settlement of homeless and elderly people who are susceptible to the extreme weather conditions.
In the Netherlands, most main routes are inaccessible. In Belgium towns are virtually snowed in and France can’t keep up with defrosting roads.
More than 1,600 individuals have been taken to local hospitals for frost treatment and 101 people have died from the cold in the Ukraine. Tents providing cots, heat and hot drinks have been setup at major cities.
Temperatures across Europe have dipped well below freezing point with some areas reporting readings at -7.6 Fahrenheit.
The one positive sign in Europe’s severe weather is people taking the cold and snow in stride. With ponds and waterways frozen solid, young and old takes advantage of good old skating fun, slaying and skiing.
Of course a snowball fight is always welcome. Even dogs join in the fun.
