BEIJING – Despite having come under fire the last week over abusing child laborers, Chinese assembly manufacturers for Apple products are seeing thousands of eager workers standing in long lines patiently waiting for hours, all with the hopes of landing a job.
Chinese from rural communities are migrating by the hundreds of thousands to major cities and look for jobs at manufacturing companies. The result is barrage of people willing to work long hours under not so favorable conditions and at low pay.
Foxconn Technology, a manufacturer for Apple and China’s largest exporter, employes 1.2 million people. Despite this company being one of the organizations accused of mistreating child laborers, young adults show up at the plant by the thousand fold asking for a job.
The company assembles tens of millions of iPhones and iPads that are sold around the world.
Foxconn is seeking to add 100,000 jobs to its existing 130,000 jobs at its factory in Zhengzhou, the capital of central Henan province. That factory location is already producing 200,000 iPhones a day.
Henan is the China’s most populous province with more than 100 million people and jobs are scares.
It explains why thousands are flocking to Foxconn Technologies, willing to work long hours for just $261 per month, which include dorm and food, even if the company has a less favorable review over how it treats its employees.
