CAIRO – In the Egyptian port city of Port Said riots erupted after a soccer game, killing at least 73 people and injuring more than one thousand individuals.
The assistant minister of the health department called the incident “the largest disaster in soccer history in Egypt”.
47 people have been arrested with regards to the riots and police is continuing its search with locating more people responsible for starting the deadly riots.
The riots broke out when supporters of the home team al-Masri, stormed onto the field after winning with a 3-1 victory against al-Ahly and began to attack the losing team’s players and fans.

Mohamed Abo Treika, a player of the al-Ahly team said on national TV “This isn’t a soccer game, this is war. People are dying right in front of me. There is no security and there aren’t any ambulances”.
A small group of police did try to protect the al-Ahly team but the Egyptian army had to be called in to evacuate the players, fans and coaches with helicopters.
The riots continued outside the stadium, injuring hundreds more.
Another soccer game was being played in Cairo during the riots break out. When that referee heard about the disaster he decided to halt that game, much to the dismay of supporters, who proceeded to put the stadium on fire.
The Egyptian soccer organization has decided to halt all Premier League games until this matter can be sorted out.
The soccer teams Al-Masri and al-Ahly are known archenemies. The past several years several bloodbaths ensued between the supporters from both teams but never at the scale as what happened on Wednesday.
