AMSTERDAM – A Superman like person capable of withstanding bullets from penetrating human skin may just be around the corner.
Dutch Scientists have been hard at work developing human skin that is four times stronger than Kevlar and bullet proof by intertwining it with silk spun by spiders.
The scientists worked hand in hand with artist Jalila Essaïdi to develop the Superman like skin tissue. Jalila thought up the idea of ‘bullet proof’ skin when she read a 2001 article written by Randy Lewis about transgenic goats and worms that spun silk in their milk.

The silk produced by the worms is five times stronger than steel and is used to produce bullet proof vests.
“Why not take it one step further and develop bullet proof skin,” says Essaïdi.
“What would happen if we people could produce that silk directly in our skin?,” asks the artist.
The project, which goes under the scientific name of ’2.6g 329m/s’ was started by a team of scientists, who eventually managed to generate human skin intertwined with spun silk that is capable of withstanding a bullet, as long as the shot isn’t fired at close range.
The entire world is involved in the project.
The skin is made in Utah, which is then send to Korea for spinning. After that process is completed, the ‘human skin’ ends up in Germany where it is woven into layers.
The whole process takes five weeks to complete and the end result is lab grown human skin woven in with spun insect silk that is four times stronger than Kevlar, the material used in bullet proof vests today.
Essaïdi says about the project: “Science Fiction becomes reality!”.
She explains:
“Imagine that Keratin, the protein that makes our skin strong, is replaced with the protein from the special spider silk. That would allow us to produce ‘little spidermen’ with bullet proof skin.
It’s like Spiderman, the Man of Steel and Superman meeting each other in reality.”
