ZURICH – For years scientists around the globe have been pondering the riddle why bees are dying off by the thousands.

An independent study conducted by a bee expert indicates that a pesticide made by Bayer is the root of the evil. According to the research, even when used in low doses, the pesticide is deadly to the bees.

Dr. Jeff Pettis of the USDA Bee Research Laboratory in Beltsville conducted the research and states that dying out of entire bee colonies has gotten worse since 2006.

Bees aren’t just beneficial for making honey, they also pollinate 70 percent of all shrubs and trees that produce fruits, flowers and vegetables, around the world.

Without bees to continue the natural ‘growth’ process, our planet will eventually depend 100 percent on ‘artificially’ or ‘lab’ produced fruits and vegetables.

The Bayer pesticide known as imidacloprid, is being used since the 1990s and organizations are currently lobbying to forbid the product.

During the research, bees were exposed to imidacloprid and results showed that those bees were three times more vulnerable than none exposed bees to the parasite ‘nosema’.

Tim Lovett, member of the British United Bee Keepers, said ‘the government must do something’.

Several years ago, Pettis had already warned government health organizations about the deadly consequences for bees exposed to pesticides.

The United States EPA approved the pesticide however on basis that the recommended usage doses wouldn’t be deadly to bees.

Dr. Julian Little, spokesperson for Bayer Crop Science, responded to Pettis’ findings saying:

“Dr. Pettis conducted his research in a lab, not in open air. Bees health is very important but focusing on pesticides makes us forget the real cause of illnesses and parasites. That’s exactly what Bayer concentrates on.”

Professor Simon Potts of the Reading University negates Dr. Little’s statement and supports Dr. Pettis’ findings.

“The impact on the death of bees caused by pesticides is usually because of the wrong application used in the open fields. Dr. Pettis’ research must serve as a warning. We must conduct better research to understand the indirect consequences of using pesticides.”
