Afghan Man Kills Wife Over Daughter

A man in Afghanistan is wanted by authorities for killing his 30 year old wife after she gave birth to a daughter.

Storay gave birth to a healthy baby girl, her third one. For her husband, who wanted a son, that was not acceptable and in a bout of rage he beat and tortured his wife to death.

The man, who is from the district Khan Abad in the province Kunduz, is on the run and police are looking for him.

A spokesperson for the authorities said that “Storay’s mother in law has been arrested in connection with her death but her husband is still at large”.

In Afghanistan, violence against women is rampant. According to first aid organization Oxfam, at least 87 percent of all Afghan women have at one time or another been the subject of violence.

Physical, sexual and mental abuse are the most common forms of violence Afghan women are exposed to. Often times women are also forced by family and relatives into marriages they would normally not consent to themselves.

In the case of Storay, her husband believes, as do many Afghan men, that not having a son is an insult to his manhood.

Additionally, men in Afghanistan carry on the family name and rule households and businesses.
