EDINBURGH – The same scientists that managed to create the clone sheep Dolly 16 years ago, have now also managed to make brain tissue from skin cells.
The scientists of the Edinburgh Center for Degenerative Medicine succeeded in generating nerve cells made from skin cells that have the same genetic proportions as brain tissue.
The Observer reports that the new medical technology will allow medicine for scleroses, Parkinson, and nerve related illnesses, to be tested for longer time periods, thus producing better healing results, possibly even cures.
Scientists use skin cells to generate stem cells which are then manipulated to evolve to brain cells. The technology was develop by building on knowledge the scientists gained when they created the genetically cloned sheep Dolly.
Professor Charles French-Constant, director of the research institute says the development of brain cells is a major step forward in diagnosing and testing for brain related illnesses of all sorts.
“It’s not possible to put a needle in someone’s brain and begin to remove brain cells,” said the professor
“Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder are all illnesses that could be tested for using the newly created genetic brain cells,” said Charles.
Scientists are already looking ahead hoping to create similar cells for other difficult to reach organs, such as the pancreas and the prostate for men.
