MELBOURNE – The 2012 Australian Open is over. And if some still wonder why it is one of the Grand Slams in tennis, the men’s single finals match between Raphael Nadal and Novak Djokovic no doubt will have erased all doubt.

Djokovic who had to battle almost five long hours against the Scott Andy Murray, to make it through the semi-finals while Nadal was resting comfortably on Friday, didn’t seem to bother the Serb one iota.

He came on court convinced he’d go home a Grand Slam winner, and that’s exactly what he did, despite having to rally against the Spaniard longer than any tennis game in the history of the sport.

And after going at it sometimes full vengeance and sometimes borderline giving up, Djokovic, who has been riding an unbelievable train of victories over the past 3 years, stood victorious once again, beating Raphael Nadal 5-7, 6-4, 2-6, 6-7 (5), 7-5 in a 5 hours and 53 minutes long game.

To say that fans from either side of the net didn’t get their money’s worth in this match, would be a grave misstatement to the sport and an insult to the players.

The Serbian tennis ‘wonder kid’ summed it up best at the end of an amazing tennis game that many will still talk about for a long time to come:

“We made history tonight and unfortunately there couldn’t be two winners.”

Djokovic’s win maintained his mastery of Nadal, who has lost seven straight finals against the Serb since March last year.
