MELBOURNE – The 2012 Australian Open for women, singles, final is over and Maria Sharapova, who was the odds on favorite to win had to settle for second place.

White Russian Victoria Azarenka (WTA 3), who defeated Belgian great Kim Clijsters in the semi-finals, took home the pot of gold and her first Grand Slam title as she made quick work of the finals game.

Beating a devastated Sharapova (WTA 4) in two easy sets (6-3 en 6-0), Azarenka demonstrated she’s an up and coming force to be reckoned with.

In addition to taking home her first Grand Slam title, the 22 year old also took the throne away from number 1 seat Caroline Wozniacki by claiming that spot for herself.
