SYDNEY – Security forces dressed in tactic gear had to be called in when Australian Premier Julia Gillard was attacked by an angry mob of Aborigines.
About two hundred demonstrators turned against Premier Gillard and her opposition party leader Tony Abbott in Australia’s capital city Canberra. The two had to scramble for safety. In the chaos, the Premier lost her right shoe.

The scuffle broke out on Australia Day, the country’s official national holiday, when Abbott demanded that a demonstration tent belonging to Aborigines must be taken down.
That was all it took for the pushing and shoving to begin. The ‘Aboriginal Tent Embassy’ has been standing next to the parliament building in Canberra for forty years and having to suddenly pack up and leave did not fair well with Australian natives.
For the Aborigines, the tent symbolizes the unfair and unequal government treatments they receive compared to other Australian citizens.
In all it took 50 security officers to bring Gillard and Abbott to safety. But even when the Premier was in her limo, demonstrators continued to attack her slamming the car’s hood and hitting the roof with clubs and sticks, calling Gillard ‘racist’ and yelling ‘shame’.
“I am a tough cookie and police handled the situation very well,” said the Premier afterwards.
The Premier refused to comment however whether Abbott should apologize to the Aborigines for wanting to remove their tent.
