ABU DHABI – Sheik Khailfa bin Said al-Nahjan, president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has performed a rare act of great kindness for his citizens who are poor and unable to pay back debts.
On Wednesday, the Sheik made it known that he forgave all debts for 6830 Emirati who were too poor to pay back what they owe. The total amount exceeds 500 million U.S. dollars. The sheik ordered that all outstanding debts be paid in full from a special fund.
The financial pardon was offered to the Emirates‘ less fortunate. Even those who were sentenced for not paying their debts and sent to jail will be forgiven, their debts paid in full and they will be allowed to go home.
The only requirement to qualify for the Sheik’s extreme kindheartedness is that each individual whose debts are forgiven, can not have credits exceeding one million UAE Dirham or 275 thousand U.S. dollars.
The ‘debt forgiveness fund’ was established in November by order of the Sheik. It has currently a total financial value of more than 10 billion UAE Dirhams or almost 4 billion U.S. dollars.
A lucrative oil industry has turned the Emirates into one of the richest nations on the planet. In contrast to Western values, in the Emirates, being worth 275 thousand dollars is equal to being ‘poor’.
