LONDON – Sumo wrestling, considered to be the sport of Gods in Japan, has also always been a sport conducted by men who use poise, grace, body weight and raw strength to outclass and outperform their opponent.
Introducing Sharran Alexander, the only 6 foot tall British female sumo wrestler, who at almost 500 pounds, is setting the world of sumo wrestling on its head.
While other female (and male) athletes are usually confined to a strict diet, Sharran eats just about everything she likes, including fried chicken.
In fact, contrary to ‘staying trim’ to be in shape, Alexander consumes a staggering 5000 calories per day; that’s 2.5 times the daily calories consumption for a normal woman.
Sharran (46) has been a successful sumo wrestler for six years. She got into the sport when a TV station aired that the U.K. was looking for four women to participate in Sumo world championship. Sharran is the only one left standing.

After her marriage broke up eight years ago, she says wrestling has given her the confidence to look for love: ‘I used to be ashamed of my size. But after taking up sumo I learned to love my body.’
She added: ‘I love being tall but when you’re trying to start a relationship it’s the hardest thing to find someone who’s taller than me.
‘When I’m with a man who is smaller than me I don’t feel like I’m the woman I want to be.
‘When I go out with friends I get chatted up by younger men who love big women.
‘I really love the attention.’
In January Sharran will travel to Japan to train with the Japanese women’s sumo team.
