TRIPOLI – The former Libyan dictator Mouammar Qaddafi may be dead but that doesn’t stop his supporters from continuing their quest to keep Libya under the Qaddafi regime.
According to M’barek al-Fotmani, a former member of the international interim council, followers of the Qaddafi regime have invaded and taken control of the city of Bani Walid.
The supporters managed to overpower the base of the same group of soldiers that were responsible for Qaddafi’s demise last year, using anti-tank weapons. The violence erupted when military tried arresting several Qaddafi supporters.
The attackers wore green flags, the symbol of the Qaddafi regime and killed 4 while wounding 20 others.
Reportedly, the supporters of the regime spread flyers last Sunday that stated:
“We will be back soon. We will exterminates those rats.”
The city of Bani Walid is situated about 100 miles southwest from Tripoli, Qaddafi’s former strong hold. Many residents there belong to the Warfallah tribe which stayed loyal to the Qaddafi regime, even after his death.
Tripoli is being reinforced with military and more military has been sent to Bani Walid to ensure no further advances are made by Qaddafi’s supporters.
The attack came one week after protests erupted against the International Interim Council and citizens complained that very little progress has been made since Qaddafi died.
Mouammar Qaddafi was killed October 2011. Since that time, Libya has experienced very little change from the old dictatorship.
