LONDON – Antarctica has been conquered a few times by several brave men, but never by a women. A British woman has changed that statistic once and for all when she became the first female to cross the vast frozen tundra by herself.
34 year old Felicity Aston will go down in history as the first woman to cross Antarctica on foot and by herself without assistance from snow dogs, a small plane or motorized vehicles.
Aston started her trip from the Leverett Glacier 59 days ago and traveled 1087.5 miles across Antarctica to arrive safe and sound at Hercules Inlet by the Weddell Sea on Sunday.
In addition to crossing the merciless wasteland, Aston also managed to reach her destination 3 days ahead of schedule, forcing her to wait in a tent until the plane arrives to fly her back to her base camp in Chili.
During her almost 2 months hike, Aston kept in touch with the outside world posting messages on Twitter and on her Facebook page.
Aston twittered that she wasn’t ready to leave the wondrous planes:
“It’s all still a bit overwhelming. I feel both excited and extremely sad. I am not ready to leave yet. I’d like to enjoy it a bit longer.”
She also tweeted how at one point her lighters stop working because of the high altitude which was problematic because she couldn’t heat up food or melt ice. Luckily she remembered having a few old fashion booklets of matches with her.
On Thursday, the woman from Kent, England will be flown back to her base camp in Chili. Writes Aston about getting back to the world of the ‘living’:
“I can’t wait to take a hot shower and sip a glass of red wine.”
