Whales Die Along New Zealand Coast

AUCKLAND – A somber display of whales dying along the New Zealand coast line unfolded after more than 100 of them got stuck on shore.

For the third time in only a short while, whales have become stranded along New Zealand. This weekend 100 hundred of the mammals were spotted along a deserted stretch of shoreline in the most Southern region of New Zealand.

The whales come on shore to consume plankton that floats close to the coast but when the water subsides, some whales get stuck in the sand and can’t return back to the ocean.

Thus far 20 of the 100 whales to get stranded have already died and New Zealand authorities state that any attempt to return the others back into the water have been unsuccessful.

Earlier this month, a group of 25 whales became stuck along New Zealand’s coastal region. Rescuers managed to save 18 of those and return them back to the ocean.

This time the picture looks much bleaker and authorities fear that all the whales may die even when the water ebbs again, because the whales have become weak and hydrated and don’t have the strength anymore to free themselves.
