LOS ANGELES – Considered to be one of the smallest babies in the world, no larger than the hand of a grown man and weighing less than a can of soda at the time she was born in August 2011, Melinda Star Guido is now strong and healthy enough she’s allowed to go home.
Baby Melinda is getting stronger by the day and despite she still only weighs about 4.5 pounds, doctors have allowed the tiny newborn to go home.
Melinda Star will have to undergo routine checkups on a regular basis for the first six years of her life to ensure she’s developing properly.
Haydee Idarra, Melinda Star’s 22 year old mother, who had to wait until November before she could take her fragile daughter in her arms, is delighted her baby is allowed to go home.
Doctors say Melinda Star Guido is a miracle baby, pointing out that most premature newborns as small as Melinda, would have very little chance of survival.
Idarra was only 24 weeks pregnant when she gave birth to Melinda, who weighed just 286 grams when she was born.
Every year 7500 premature babies are born in the United States who weigh 500 grams or less at the time of birth. Only 10 percent of them survive.
