SIDNEY – When Pat Farmer announced he wanted to run on foot starting at the North Pole and ending at the South Pole, his family and close friends he had lost it.
But the Australian native not only proved to all of them that he was still sane, but that he had more courage, physical stamina and mental focus then all of them combined.
Farmer completed his quest in less than one year, running the entire distance of 13,125 miles, often times enduring extreme conditions.

On Thursday the Aussie firmly planted his country’s flag on the most Southern tip. The flag is there to stay forever, as a reminder to those who ever visit this place that they may know the incredible and almost inhuman feat he accomplished.
The ex-politician ran 50 miles a day and crossed 14 countries during his run. He began his amazing quest on April 2 2011 with the desire to race money for water projects for the Red Cross.
Farmer says that this was a life-changing experience and that he encountered many adventures during his trip.
He recounts how he got lost in the desert of Peru and how at other times he had to be on the alert for crocodiles, snakes and polar bears.
Farmer also recalls how danger it was when he crossed paths with militants and armed gangs and how he barely escaped being run over by a freight truck.
