NEW YORK – The activist group Outrage! has released an anti-gay bashing app intended to make people aware of the violence committed against gay people.
The smartphone app uses Google Maps to report locations where violence occurred against homosexuals.
Liesbeth Pyck of the promo agency Famous, which created the app, says both physical and verbal abuse against gay people are noted on Google Maps making people acutely aware of the growing problem of gay-bashing.
Outrage! wants to point out that gay-bashing has become a serious and real problem and hopes the app will force people to take notice. Reportedly 6 out of 10 gay people are verbally abused. 20 percent of them receive violent threats and 1 in 10 is physically attacked.Gay individuals aren’t quick to file a claim of harassment however because of personal shame or fear of even greater assault. Outrage! hopes that its app will inspire homosexuals to report any incident of abuse.
The anti-gay-bashing app is available for free for both iPhones and Android based cell phones and can be downloaded directly from the Apple store or the Android Market using the search term ‘bashing’.
