WASHINGTON – American high school students are feverishly biting their nails in anticipation when the only encyclopedia site Wikipedia, releases its blackout.
Without being able to search for information on the extremely popular “all info” site, teens aren’t able to finish their homework; at least not the “do it at home, fast and easy” way.
Wikipedia is protesting the Congress’s decision to introduce anti-piracy legislation that would cause many sites to be censored because of copyright violations; even if this legislation was violated unknowingly and unwillingly.
The proposed legislation would “shut down” any site that violates any type of copyright, even if the copyright in question is a link from an other site that actually commits the offense.
Boing Boing, which also blacked out its site in support against the rules explains:
Other sites such as Google, Huffington Post and yours truly, are asking visitors to sign a petition that will stop the proposed legislation in its tracks.
But for teens not having access to the English version of Wikipedia is a nightmare. They are forced to resort to “old fashion” and “cumbersome” methods to finish their homework like going to a library and manually search through books for the information they need.
Teens do have several other methods however to access their favorite resource site and get their homework done on time.
For iPhone and Android Wikipedia app users, there is no blackout and for computer users, pressing the ‘escape key’ while the front page loads will remove the black out screen.
The two proposed anti-piracy rules known as SOPA (in the House of Representatives) and PIPA (in the Senate), is very much to the liking of Hollywood which says its film sales on line suffer tremendously because of illegal downloading.
The blackout will last 24 hours and is the first of its kind on the internet.
