MARRAKESH – Fragments of a meteorite that were found in Morocco last summer are reportedly from the planet Mars.
Even before the news was announced of the origins of the stones, universities, museums and even NASA had already offered to pay huge sums of money to possess the rocks.
People saw the fragments fall from the sky over Morocco in July 2011. Immediately rumors began to spread that the pieces of rock may have come from the ‘Red Planet’.
A businessman bought the fragments from individuals who found the rocks. He has since sold his collection for a large amount of money. Reportedly, each rock piece is worth ten times the price of gold.
Expert Chris Herd, who managed to acquire a Mars stone fragment says: “It’s a free sample from Mars, you only have to pay dealers to get it”.
Astronomers believe that the fragments are possibly remnants from a collision that occurred millions of years ago between Mars and a large object causing fragments to break off and swirl in space.
Several rock fragments were found in Morocco, the largest piece weighs about 14.5 pounds. Astronomers claim the Mars rocks are invaluable because up until now not a single space expedition has managed to return items from Mars.
Additionally it has been almost 50 years since the last Mars rock was found on earth.
