MADRID – Throughout history many superstitious believes are practiced by various people from many different cultures all over the world.
In Spain such ancient believe, that is still practiced today, turns ordinary horses into fire demons.
In the town of San Bartolome de Pinares, each new year, hundreds of riders make their horses jump over, run or walk through huge bonfires.
The people of the town that is located in the province of Ávila, Castile and León, Spain, call onto San Anton (Saint Anthony or Saint Antonius) for protection. They believe that the smoke of the fire makes their horses stronger and protects them throughout the new year.
The fire jump isn’t for the fainthearted however as flames literally engulf the rider and his horse.

Despite the intense heat and a real danger of sustaining severe burn injuries, both the rider and the horse brave the fire, often wearing little to no protection, believing completely that San Anton will protect them and bring them through the fire unharmed.

The villagers of San Bartolome de Pinares believe their mules, donkeys and horses are protected by St Anthony throughout the year because of the festival.
It has been criticized by animal rights activists who claim it is cruel, but organizers insist the horses come to no harm.
