BEIJING – Just a few days ago, Apple Inc. announced for the first time ever which factories it uses to assemble and deliver its high-tech gadgets.
Two journalists brought a visit to some of these plants and uncovered a vast number of children employed as laborers to work assembly lines putting the electronic devices together.
For years Apple Inc has denied that children are being used to assemble iPods and iPads but now journalists Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times, and Mike Daisey managed to take photos children putting together Apple equipment.
In all the journalists counted some 20,000 children working in Chinese factories assembling Apple electronics.
The Chinese factory Foxconn, one of Apple’s largest distribution centers, employs over 430,000 people; 5 percent of them are children. The gates to the factory are guarded by armed men making it impossible for outsiders to enter the enormous plant.
The journalists observed that countless young girls, not older than 13 years of age, entered or left the factory.
Apple says it is aware of Foxconn using children as laborers and requires that the company complies to a strict age limit and checks to make sure the factory adheres to those demands.
The inspections are announced beforehand however, giving Foxconn ample time to adjust its labor force to be in compliance with Apple’s request.
According to Apple, the distributor is not aware its factories employees children and if there are children working there it’s because of a “glitch in the system”, says Apple.
