His death at 83 was related to a heart condition, Mexico’s National Council for Arts and Culture said.
Despite winning awards that included the Miguel de Cervantes Prize and Mexico’s National Prize in Literature, he never won a Nobel prize, unlike some of his contemporaries. The author of books such as Where the Air is Clear, The Death of Artemio Cruz and The Old Gringo, Fuentes was the son of a diplomat, and was equally comfortable in Spanish and English.
He was born in Panama, spent much of his youth in Washington, and later in life divided his time between Mexico City and London.
