WASHINGTON – Only months after a brand new statue of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King was put on display in the U.S. capital city Washington, orders have been given to “revise” the monument.
A much shortened version of Dr. King’s famous speech was originally engraved in the statue but reportedly, brought across the wrong message.
Now Ken Salazar, U.S. Minister of Internal Affairs has ordered on Saturday to readjust the inscription, in time for King’s celebration on Monday.
The shortened citation on the monument reads:
“I was a drum major justice, peace and righteousness.”
The original sentence spoken by Martin Luther King some forty years ago actually states:
“If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness.”

According to human rights activists, the shortened version makes the civil rights peace fighter sound arrogant and obnoxious.
Salazar emphasized the importance of displaying the correct text saying about the existing script “I don’t think this is a fitting portrayal of who Dr. King was”.
Architects are rushing to change the inscription just in time for Monday’s celebration of Dr. King, a national holiday in the United States.
They have made it clear however that the statue does not have enough space to cite the entire text.
The new inscription has not been shown to the media yet and it is thus unknown what portion of the original text have been left out the new inscription.
The Dr. King statue has been receiving lots of criticism since it was first installed by Chinese engineers in October 2011.
