NEW DELHI – The Indian court announced it is considering to block big websites that do not make an effort in preventing material labeled ‘embarrassing’ to Indian leaders, from being viewed on their sites.
Indian dignitaries aren’t pleased with some sites displaying cartoon type images of high ranking officials in compromising positions or pigs wondering around in downtown Mecca, the holy city of Islam.
Minister of Communication, Kapil Sibal, promised last month to act with a strong hand against ‘unacceptable content’ online.
If sites do not remove such content, they will be banned ‘just like in China’, according to the Minister.
India accounts for 110 million internet users which could reach 600 million over the next five years.
Being banned from having having their websites displayed to Indian users could have a major impact on sites such as Google and Facebook, which are the sites Sibal was referring to when he stated ‘just like in China’.
Neither Google nor Facebook have made any remarks about India’s alleged new ruling nor have they stated whether or not the Indian courts are directly referring to them.
