British Police Play Favorite

LONDON – The U.K.’s famous Scotland Yard stands accused of being racist as recent arrest statistics indicate that British Police are less “friendly” towards black people.

A recent survey of police pat-downs conducted throughout England and Wales over the past 12 months, reveals that black people were checked by British cops 30 percent more often than whites for possession of a weapon.

That’s a 10 percent increase over last year’s pat-downs and three times as much as in 2009. Yet less than 0.5 percent of black people who where stopped by police and checked, actually had a weapon on them, five times less than 10 years ago.

British cops aren’t just favoring whites over blacks in their own country; even on an international scale, the U.K. police has the highest number of racist profiling in the world.

Racial profiling in the United Kingdom isn’t exactly anything new but the increase of number of cases is. The number of blacks confronted by British cops for possession of a firearm has increased yet another 10 percent since last year.

British police is allowed under the country’s laws to pat-down anyone at any time without having a specific reason.

Criminologist Michael Shiner of the London School of Economics, who was involved with the survey says it’s time for a more responsible control system.

“All too often, minorities who complain about police brutality and injustice, see their case being tossed to the side, are completely ignored or their case is stamped as ‘unjust’”.

Human rights activists have begun voicing their view against the practices by Scotland Yard, known as ‘Section 60′ and have stated that under the European laws, U.K.’s racial profiling by its police wouldn’t hold grounds because it violates a number of human rights.

Since the survey was released, Scotland Yard has stated it will ease up on Section 60 and put less priority on the anti-terrorist law.
