Alaska Buried Under Mountains Of Snow

ANCHORAGE – Even for Alaska, which is used to frigged winter and lots of snow, the recent excessive snowfall is more than America’s Northern state could handle.

Parts of Alaska are literally buried under 30 feet of snow and other regions are blocked from the outside world because of frozen roadways.

In the city of Cordova, near the Canadian border, two story buildings are completely covered under snow. The Cordova news paper calls the severe winter storm “Snowpocalypse”.

Already double the amount of Alaska’s average annual snowfall has accumulated as snow fell continuously for 24 days.

Traffic lies still, schools are closed and stores selling snow equipment are completely sold empty.

The 3,600 residents of Nome are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a Russian tanker bringing them much needed diesel and other desperately needed provisions. The city missed an earlier delivery of the goods because of severe frost.

For the past month, the 330 foot long tanker has been trying desperately to make way through the frozen Bering Sea. The last few miles, just before the coastline, are treacherously slow because thick ice packs make it extremely difficult and dangerous for the ship to maneuver.
